400-408 Apologetics 101: The Trinity.

The fundamental argument in the 4th century trinitarian debate was over an iota – the Greek letter "i".  The question was, What is the correct word to describe the relationship between the Father and the Son?  Was it "homoousias", that the Father and the Son are of the same substance, as advocated by Athanasius?  Or, was it "homoiousias", that the Father and the Son are of a similar substance, as advocated by Arius?  The debate between Athanasius and Arius was almost settled at the Council of Nicea in 325, but was finally settled at the Council of Constantinople in 381.  The heresy of Arius, known as Arianism, is the belief that Jesus was the first created being, and that he then created everything else.  Sound familiar?  It should.  The Jehovah's Witnesses of today continue the 4th century Arianism heresy.

The orthodox view of the Trinity is that the three distinct Persons of the Godhead (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) share the One Divine Nature – three persons, one God – not three gods, because each Person is also fully God.

The "hypostatic union," or the orthodox view of the God-Man, the theanthropos, is that Jesus Christ is both fully God and fully man – two natures, one person – as Paul clarified in Philippians 2.

428-437Mark Brewer, senior pastor at Bel Air Presbyterian Church (belairpres.org).  Mark talks about the three "p's" of liberal theology: peacemaking, poverty, and pollution – and of course, no need for a savior because there's no sin, and no need for accepting the gospel to avoid hell, because there is no hell, only hell on earth – which is why progressives are trying to make "heaven on earth."
