Risks now seen by terrorists and rogue states as unwise during the cowboyish Bush administration may once again seem worth reconsideration in a manner reminiscent of the Clinton years. Talking of soft power, multilateralism, the U.N., dialogue, and restoring our image abroad are all salutary and resonate well in Europe; but to others more nefarious, such calming assurances may send the opposite message that the U.S. is now predictable — and predictably not going to hit hard back when provoked. Deterrence is earned with difficulty and over many years, but it is easily lost in seconds.
What should we then expect? As some point, perhaps in his first few months in office, President Obama, as Joe Biden predicted, will be tested by the rogue oil-producing states. Most — like Iran, Russia, and Venezuela — will soon be facing bankruptcy if oil prices stay flat, as their only source of foreign exchange largely vanishes. Expect all in multifarious ways to test America, in part to humiliate the United States, but more likely simply to cause enough tension to create panic among speculators and restore their windfall profits. Anyone can dream up scenarios — a move on Georgia, a cutoff of natural gas entirely to Europe, a brazen announcement of an Iranian bomb with a dare to Israel to stop it, a suicide attack on a tanker or warship in the Straits of Hormuz, flagrant violation of the Monroe Doctrine by home porting Russian vessels in Venezuela, simultaneous rocket barrages from Lebanon, Gaza, and Syria, etc. For such countries, any disruption is good in the sense that it creates panic, and panic in turn spikes oil prices.

458-508Nonie Darwish, author of Cruel and Usual Punishment: The Terrifying Global Implications of Islamic Law (noniedarwish.com)
Born in Cairo, Egypt, Darwish moved to Gaza in the 1950s when her father, Lt. General Mustafa Hafez, was sent by Gamal Abdel Nasser to serve as commander of the Egyptian Army Intelligence in Gaza, which was then occupied by Egypt.  Hafez founded the fedayeen who launched raids across Israel's southern border, that between 1951 and 1956, killed some 400 Israelis. In July 1956 when Nonie was eight years old, her father became the first targeted assassination carried out by the Israeli Defense Forces in response to Fedayeen's attacks, making him a shahid.  During his speech announcing the nationalization of the Suez Canal, Nasser vowed that all of Egypt would take revenge for Hafez's death.  Darwish claims that Nasser asked her and her siblings, "Which one of you will avenge your father's death by killing Jews?"
Darwish explains, "I always blamed Israel for my father's death, because that's what I was taught. I never looked at why Israel killed my father. They killed my father because the fedayeen were killing Israelis. They killed my father because when I was growing up, we had to recite poetry pledging jihad against Israel. We would have tears in our eyes, pledging that we wanted to die. I speak to people who think there was no terrorism against Israel before the '67 war. How can they deny it? My father died in it."

(4:02) AC View 1.  Ann Coulter, on The View today (1/12/09), says Hollywood glamorizes single motherhood while all the statistics show children from single moms are far more likely to end up in prison.  Coulter says women who purposefully become single moms are selfish.  "Victim of a crime?  Thank a single mother."
(:13) AC View 1a.  Barbara Walters makes the case for older single moms, and Ann calls it selfish.
Should we be "encouraging" or "glorifying" single motherhood in the face of all the social costs?
• Where it has been legalized, same-sex marriage decreases the total number of marriages while increasing illegitimacy. Six European nations have had same-sex marriage since the early 90s—and just 2 percent of same-sex couples in these countries ever bother to marry, while there has been a 46 percent increase in out-of-wedlock births. Same-sex couples simply do not marry in significant number when given the legal right to do so, while more heterosexual couples will not bother to get married before having children. In these nations, 70 percent of all births now take place outside of marriage, and among first-time mothers, 80 percent are unmarried. Same-sex marriage will result in fewer total marriages and more children born out of wedlock.
• Both religion and political philosophy recognize that it is for the common good that states preserve, protect and promote successful marriages and healthy families in order to produce the maximum number of healthy children who later become productive citizens. However, since the sexual revolution of the 1960s, we have increased the number of broken families producing damaged children, and these damaged children have burdened both the size and cost of the welfare state.
• The combined effects of the pill, condom distribution, abortion on demand, no-fault divorce and the acceptance of illegitimacy have been socially and economically devastating. Half of all American marriages now end in divorce. One-third of all American children are now born outside of marriage—including one-half of all Hispanic kids and nearly three out of four African-American kids. Half of all urban freshman never graduate high school. Our prisons are overflowing, 80% of inmates grew up with single mothers.  70% of runaways are from single mothers.  Illegitimacy is up 300% since 1970.  As all social science research has proved time and again, illegitimacy begets poverty, poverty begets crime, crime begets social decline and social decline begets higher taxes to pay for the bigger government necessary to care for the social and economic costs associated with the millions of "at risk" children who, disproportionately,  become unproductive citizens.

• Stephen Dinan (1/12/09) Obama climate czar has socialist ties.
Until last week, Carol M. Browner, President-elect Barack Obama's pick as global warming czar, was listed as one of 14 leaders of a socialist group's Commission for a Sustainable World Society, which calls for "global governance" and says rich countries must shrink their economies to address climate change.
By Thursday, Mrs. Browner's name and biography had been removed from Socialist International's Web page, though a photo of her speaking June 30 to the group's congress in Greece was still available.
