400-408Charles Kesler, Director of the Salvatori Center (claremontmckenna.edu/salvatori), and Professor of Government at Claremont McKenna College, remembers William F. Buckley, Jr., who wrote over 50 books, hosted TV's Firing Line for 33 years, and founded National Review in 1955 – he was "the most important journalist of the last 75 years," and simply, "The Conservative."  Kesler transcribed Buckley's final column just a few weeks ago.
• I believe that the duel between Christianity and atheism is the most important in the world. I further believe that that the struggle between individualism and collectivism is the same struggle reproduced on another level. -- "God and Man at Yale," 1951
At a press conference during his campaign for mayor of New York City:  Do you have any chance of winning?  Buckley: No.  Q: Do you really want to be mayor?  Buckley: I've never considered it.  Q: Well, conservatively speaking, how many votes do you expect to get?  Buckley: One.  Q: And who would cast that vote?  Buckley: My secretary.-- 1965 (When later asked what he would do if elected, he replied, "Demand a recount.")
Henry Gibson: Mr. Buckley, I have noticed that whenever you appear on television, you're always seated. Is that because you can't think on your feet?  Buckley: It's very hard to stand up carrying the weight of what I know.  -- Appearance on "Laugh-In," 1970

413-423Charles Kesler.  Buckley:  his generosity, his grace, elegance, humor and joy, and his deep inspiration to a generation of conservatives.

PP:  "Let me put you through to Tim in our development office."

O:  "Is there anyone I can speak to now?"

PP:  "Me."

O:  "Who am I speaking with now?"

PP:  "My name is Lisa Hutton."

O:  "Lisa, what is your position?"

PP: "Administrative assistant."

O: "When I underwrite an abortion, does that apply to minorities too?"

PP:  "If you specifically want to underwrite it for a minority person, you can target it that way. You can specify that that's how you want it spent."

O:  "Okay, yeah, because there's definitely way too may black people in Ohio. So, I'm just trying to do my part."

PP:  "Hmm. Okay, whatever."

O:  "Blacks especially need abortions too. So, that's what I'm trying to do."

PP:  "Well, for whatever reason, we'll accept the money."

O:  "Great, Thank You."

PP:  "Mmmm, hmmm."
