400-408 • FRC (6/24/2010) House Passage of the DISCLOSE Act is Unconstitutional Political Charade.

• CWFA (6/25/2010) Congress Votes to Stifle Political Speech.

• FRC (6/25/2010) The (Trans)Parent Trap.

DISCLOSE passed 219-206, with 36 Democrats opposed.  It now moves to the Senate, where even Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) opposes it.  Unions would be free to spend as much as they want on political campaigns and advertisements, but groups like the Family Research Council, the Alliance Defense Fund, Focus on the Family, Concerned Women for America, etc., along with any corporation or non-profit would be subject to onerous regulations.  So Democrats exempt, Republicans restricted.

DISCLOSE stands for Democracy is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections.

Here's some of the restrictions:  The top 5 donors to any business or non-profit must be presented in a television ad, whether those donors contributed to the particular campaign or not.  The CEOs must appear in the ad, twice state their name and the organization's name.  The biggest donor must list his name, rank, and organization three times, and the names of all those donors who gave $600 or more must be submitted to the Federal Elections Committee where they will be posted on the FEC website.  It also bans election-related communications 90 days before the primaries up until the general election.  Of course it's unconstitutional, but that doesn't matter, the damage will have been done, the election will have been over by the time the courts throw it out.  What are you going to do?  Nullify an entire election?
