330-338Joni Eareckson Tada has been a quadriplegic confined to a wheelchair for the past 42 years, since a diving accident in July 1967 – and she's the least "disabled" disabled person I know.  She's written 35 books, over a million people a week hear her "Joni & Friends" (joniandfriends.org), daily 5-minute broadcast, her paintings (done with a paint brush between her teeth) are sought by collectors all over the world, and she's an accomplished vocalist!  How's that for being "disabled?"  She and her husband Ken have been happily married since 1982.  Her latest book is entitled A Lifetime of Wisdom: Embracing The Way God Heals You.  She is the founder of the International Disability Center in Agoura Hills, and today she shares about the new Christian Institute on Disability (2008).
Steve Bundy is the managing director of the Christian Institute on Disability, built around a 32-hour certificate program in disability ministry comprised of four modules:  Overview of Disability, Theology of Suffering and Disability, The Church and Disability, and Introduction to Bioethics.  Participants learn through lecture, group discussion, video and hands-on experience to evangelize, welcome into the church and empower those affected by disability.  It's designed for ministers, professionals, teachers, volunteers, students and anyone interested in learning more about effective disability ministry.
BTW: There's an upcoming debate on Friday, September 18, 2009, between Peter Singer and Wesley Smith at Biola University on the ethics of "designer babies," entitled "Beauty, Brokenness, and Designer Babies."
