413-423Ron Prentice, Executive Director of the California Family Council (californiafamily.org), invites us to attend a "Wait No More" event at Calvary Chapel Downey on September 19, where we'll hear of the tremendous need in Southern California to care for "orphans," namely kids in foster care who are eligible for adoption.  Along with Focus on the Family, there are numerous local organizations such as Olive Crest, Koinonia Homes, Bethany Christian Services, and California Family Council.  And, next Thursday, August 6, there will be a Wait No More pastor's luncheon at Biola.  For info go to  Californiafamily.org.
428-437Bert Boeckmann, owner and president of Galpin Motors (galpin.com), family-owned and operated for the past 59 years, and the #1 volume Ford dealer in the world for the past 19 consecutive years, on the Cash for Clunkers program.
• Los Angeles Times (7/31/09) House OKs $2 billion more for 'cash for clunkers'.
• CARS.gov (7/31/09) The Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS).  Key Points:  Vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date;  the vehicle must get 18 or less MPG;  you must have clear title and have had the vehicle registered and insured continuously for the preceding year; and the vehicle will be sold for scrap, and you get that money too, less a $50 administration cost for the dealer.  You'll get between $3500 and $4500 depending upon the improvement in gas mileage, a 10mpg difference between the clunker and your new vehicle gets you the full $4,500.
• CHILD (7/31/09) Children's Healthcare Is a Legal Duty, Inc. (childrenshealthcare.org).
CHILD, Inc., doesn't think so. "Children's Healthcare Is a Legal Duty" (CHILD, Inc.) is a non-profit national membership organization established in 1983 to protect children from abusive religious and cultural practices, especially religion-based medical neglect. CHILD opposes religious exemptions from duties of care for children.
CHILD's website has an outstanding collection of resources — and disturbing look at childhood deaths associated with religious belief. CHILD published a partial list of religions whose members have let children die since 1980 because of their religious beliefs against medical care:
Faith Assembly, Followers of Christ, Christian Science, Church of the First Born, Faith Tabernacle, End Time Ministries, The Believers' Fellowship, Faith Temple Doctoral Church of Christ in God, Church of God of the Union Assembly, Church of God Chapel, Jehovah's Witnesses (Their only objection today is to blood transfusions.) Jesus through Jon and Judy, Christ Assembly, Christ Miracle Healing Center, Northeast Kingdom Community Church, "No Name" fellowship, The Source.
• MSNBC (7/30/09) Man testifies he expected God to heal his child.  Is this man guilty of homicide? Child abuse?  What role does God play in healing and what role does the doctors and medicine play?  What would your response be to those who would say the reason the child died was because the father did not have enough faith?  If we have the right kind of "faith," should we not see any doctor, psychologist, therapist, trainer, or nurse?  Or perhaps not talk to financial experts regarding our estates, or lawyers regarding our wills or our legacy or lawsuits we're party to?  Should we not read any other books than the bible?  Should we avoid sending our kids to school, or to college, or learning a trade?  Should we use electricity, indoor plumbing, a computer or a telephone?
