413-423Thomas Sowell, Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University, is a nationally-syndicated columnist whose voice is highly respected by those across the political spectrum, and he's out with a revised and enlarged edition of his classic  Applied Economics: Thinking Beyond Stage One (tsowell.com).
Sowell was born in North Carolina, his father had died before he was born, he grew up in Harlem, dropped out of high school because he had to go to work, and entered the Marine Corps in 1951 for the Korean War.  After his discharge, he passed the GED and enrolled at Howard University, and later transferred to Harvard where he graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in Economics.  He went on to earn a Masters in Economics at Columbia, and then a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago.  He was profoundly influenced by his mentor, economist George Stigler.
