After his discharge, he passed the GED and enrolled at Howard University, and later transferred to Harvard where he graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in Economics. He went on to earn a Masters in Economics at Columbia, and then a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago. He was profoundly influenced by his mentor, economist George Stigler.
