• Fox News (2/3/09) Stimulus Backers Face Growing Skepticism Over Need for Government Action.  A Gallup poll released Tuesday finds a strong majority of Americans want Congress to pass some form of stimulus, but have severe doubts about the measures currently being considered to boost the economy.  75% want something done.  38% like this proposal as is, 37% want major changes, and 17% reject the plan outright.
• John J. Pitney Jr. (2/3/09) Steele's Challenge: He faces some tough GOP math.
Summary:  Democrats own all 31 congressional districts where blacks are at least 40% of the population, and 35 of the 42 districts where Hispanics are at least 40% – with 3 of the 7 holdouts being primarily Cuban districts in Florida.  There are no Republican seats among New England's 22 House seats, and of New York's 29 House seats, just 3 are Republicans, and none from New York City.  Thus, to regain a majority in the House, Republicans must win 2/3 of all remaining districts since the Democrats have 106 locked up that are either black, Hispanic, New England, or New York.
