• Bloomberg (7/28), Obama Wins Young Evangelical Voters in Battleground-State Push.  The religious left, with prodding from other Obama supporters, have broadened the definition of "pro-life" beyond the abortion question so that it now includes the fights against poverty, war, disease, global warming and genocide.  The new spin is "Obama is pro-life on 5 out of 6 issues, while McCain is pro-life on just one.  So who's really pro-life?"
• Fox News, Kristol: Colin Powell To Endorse Barack Obama.  Bill Kristol claims he's got the inside scoop, but Powell spokesperson Peggy Cifrino says, "There's absolutely no truth to this."

Western governments and Western oil executives have played an unwise role in Mr. Putin's plan. No amount of contract abrogation, outright seizure of property or subsidiary mayhem by Russian authorities seems able to dissuade them from throwing good money after bad in pursuit of Russian resources. Western minority shareholders in Yukos were wiped out with nary a peep when the Russian government seized the oil company on tax charges. There's been virtually no official pushback as environmental offenses were alleged as a reason to squeeze Western partners out of various drilling and pipeline projects after billions of dollars were committed.
528-539Jennifer Monk, an attorney with Advocates For Faith and Freedom (faith-freedom.com), on last Friday's decision by U.S. District Judge James Otero to deny course credit to UC applicants from Christian high schools whose textbooks declare the Bible infallible and reject evolution.  Monk says, "It appears the UC is attempting to secularize private religious schools."  Monk represents the Association of Christian Schools International, two Southern California Christian high schools and several students.

• Fox News (8/13/08), Phelps becomes winningest Olympic athlete ever.  11 career golds, and counting, and he's 5 for 5 in Golds and World Records so far.
• Breitbart (8/13/08), US team blame stadium official for gymnastics loss.  Alicia Sacramone fell off the balance beam on her initial mount, and went out of bounds in the floor exercise to effectively eliminate the American's from winning the Gold.  She and her coach, Martha Karolyi, claim the officials effectively "iced" her by making her wait too long before she could start her routine.
US team coordinator Martha Karolyi said officials at Beijing's National Indoor Stadium had disrupted Sacramone's preparations for the beam.  "First they called her name up, then they did not even put her name up even though the Chinese had finished ... (it was) totally unusual holding," she said.  "She was mentally prepared and then she had a mental break, then after not doing the job, the beam, on the floor exercise her concentration was bothered."
Sacramone added that she lost concentration because of the delay leading into her beam performance.  "I was just really eager to do my routine and get the show on the road but they did hold me for quite some time and I guess I lost my nerve a little bit," she said.  Asked how long she could maintain focus while waiting to perform her routines, she replied: "Apparently not long enough."
