400-408 – • AP, Study: Nearly Half of Americans Change Their Religious Beliefs.  Here's the "Landscape Survey" report.  Pew interviewed 35,000 adults over 18 and found the following.
• Half of American adults have left their faith tradition.  28%  leave their faith tradition for another religion or no religion at all.  Hindus have the highest retention rate at 84%.  Jehovah's Witnesses have the worst retention rate at 33%.
• Those "losing" religion outnumber those "getting" religion by 3 to 1.
• 78% of Americans are Christian, 51% are Protestant but that will soon change as they quickly become a minority.
• Half of American Buddhists are white, most are converts.  Buddhists and Muslims are less than 1% of the population, while Jews are 1.7%.
• 31% of Americans were raised Catholic, yet just 24% are Catholic today.  10% of Americans are ex-Catholic. Immigration plays a huge role in Catholic numbers.  Among the foreign-born, Catholics outnumber Protestants 2 to 1.  Among native-born, it's the reverse.  Half of all Catholics under 30 are Hispanic.
• Mainline Protestant denominations are in decline.  Baptists are 33% of all Protestants and 20% of the population.
• 44% of adults have moved from one Protestant denomination to another.  Among the Protestants, 26% are evangelical, 18% are mainline, and 7% are black Protestant churches.
• Hindus and Mormons are the most likely to marry one of their own, 78% and 71% respectively.
• Non-denominational churches are growing.  Most converts to evangelicalism were raised Protestant.
• One in four adults aged 18-29 claim no religious affiliation, 12% are currently "unaffiliated."  Atheists or agnostics are currently just 4% of the population.
Is there a common factor among those churches or religions that are shrinking?  A factor among those that are growing?  Why are there so many ex-Catholics?  Why are there so few atheists, yet so many young people "unaffiliated" with religion?

Why with so few atheists, less than 5%, are there so many young people "unaffiliated" with religion, about 25% of those between 18 and 29?
