400-408 – • Snopes, The Wright Stuff.  Rev. Joe Wright, pastor of the Central Christian Church of Wichita, gave the opening prayer at a session of the Kansas House of Representatives in January 1996.  A version of this prayer has traveled the world via the internet, though it is not the original actually given before the governing body.  And, Wright modeled his prayer after one Bob Russell gave at the 1995 Kentucky Governor's Prayer Breakfast in Frankfort, Kentucky.  Here's the actual prayer Wright gave.
Heavenly Father, we come before you to ask your forgiveness. We seek your direction and your guidance. We know your word says, "Woe to those who call evil good." But that's what we've done.
We've lost our spiritual equilibrium. We have inverted our values. We have ridiculed the absolute truth of your word in the name of moral pluralism. We have worshiped other gods and called it multiculturalism.
We have endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle.
We've exploited the poor and called it a lottery. We've neglected the needy and called it self-preservation. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. In the name of choice, we have killed our unborn. In the name of right to life, we have killed abortionists.
We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem. We have abused power and called it political savvy. We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it taxes. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.
Search us, oh, God, and know our hearts today. Try us. Show us any wickedness within us. Cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent here by the people of the State of Kansas, and that they have been ordained by you to govern this great state.
Grant them your wisdom to rule.  May their decisions direct us to the center of your will. And, as we continue our prayer and as we come in out of the fog, give us clear minds to accomplish our goals as we begin this Legislature. For we pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Heavenly Father, on this National Day of Prayer, we ask Your forgiveness for all our many sins and we seek Your direction and Your guidance for our blessed nation.
At our nation's birth, we declared our independence with these words,
WE hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness — That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its Powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
Lord, we believe that You have created all men equal, and we believe this truth to be self-evident.
We know rights must come either from You or from Government, and if from government they can be revoked, but if from You, then they are unalienable and can never be revoked. 
We believe it is the responsibility of government to secure these rights, and if government fails to do so, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish that government.
We believe that a government's just powers derive from the consent of the governed, and a government without that consent is unjust and deserves to be replaced with new government.
Lord, thank you that we no longer need a revolution to establish our independence or to form new governments, but with the blessings of liberty and freedom, and the responsibility of self-government, comes the ability to change governments with ballots rather than bullets.
Yet, Lord, forgive us that too few of your children cast ballots for those who will promote your values, proclaim your truth, and protect your Name.  When your children are silent, darkness prevails.  We only get the leaders we deserve.
And Lord, we know that when Your Word confronts the sinner, either Your Word will work to change that sinner, or the sinner will work to change your Word.
Lord, may we no longer fear to preach Your Word.
Search us, O God, and know our hearts today; try us and see if there be some wicked way in us; cleanse us from every sin and set us free; rekindle the fire of truth and righteousness within our hearts, and empower us to be the salt and light You have called us to be.
Lord as we live with deception and deceit all around us, help us to be men and women of truth, integrity, and trust,
And Lord, help us to see that if You are not Lord of all, You are not Lord at all;
We ask these things in the name of Your Son, the Living Savior, Jesus Christ. 
Amen.
