458-508 – Dave Dravecky was a major league pitcher for 8 years with the Padres and Giants, got diagnosed with cancer on his left arm in 1988, had the lump removed, rehabbed, and made it back to the big leagues in 1989 – giving rise to his book Comeback (1990).  However, on August 15, 1989, while pitching against the Expos, his arm snapped and his baseball career was over – the cancer was back.  Over the next two years, he and his wife Jan lived through hell.  The lowest point was June 18, 1991, when his left arm was amputated.  Lower still, would be the months after the amputation – as told in their book When You Can't Come Back (1992).  As a result of their own pain and suffering, they started a ministry in 1991 called Endurance (endurance.org), to serve those on their journey through suffering – whether it is suffering from divorce, depression, loss, be it relational or financial, but especially to those fighting cancer and dealing with amputation.

If you contact them through the website, they'll send you an Encouragement Basket with three items:  An Encouragement Bible, their book When You Can't Come Back, and the devotional, Do Not Lose Heart.  Three other excellent resources they recommend are:  Philip Yancey's two books Where is God When It Hurts?, and Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference?, and Jerry Sittser's Grace Disguised.  Dave's other books include The Worth of a Man (1998), and his latest Called Up: Stories of Life and Faith From the Great Game of Baseball (2004).
