428-438 – Dan Gainor, Vice President of Business & Culture for the Media Research Center (mrc.org), talks about the way the media is covering Tim Tebow and his Christianity.

• Matt Kiszla, (Denver Post, 10/23/2011) Broncos' Tebow more than a quarterback.

• Paul Wilson (Newsbusters, 10/21/2011) NFL Analysts: Tim Tebow Hated Because of His Faith.

Showtime Sports' Oct. 12 edition of 'Inside the NFL' featured a nearly 5-minute segment on Tebow.  Analysts Brown and Collinsworth were joined by former NFL stars Warren Sapp and Phil Simms discussing Tebow's faith - and the controversial reactions to it.

Host JB Brown teased the segment: ''This is a guy that you either love to have him or you hate to love him. What is it about him that folks are so polarized?''

// Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Cris Collinsworth concluded that much of the hatred against Tebow was based on his religious beliefs. Responding to a question from fellow host James 'JB' Brown, Collinsworth showed his disgust for Tebow's treatment: ''It's unbelievable, though, JB, that one of the best kids - just pure kids that's ever come into the NFL - is hated because of his faith, because of his mission work, because of the fact that he wears it on his sleeve, because of the fact that he lives his life that he talks about.''

// Brown and Collinsworth concluded that much of the hatred against Tebow was based on faith. Brown pointed out: ''There's a number of guys who come into the league with a big marquee, fat paychecks, a lot of attention, and folks don't seem to hate them with the same intensity that they hate Tim Tebow.'' Collinsworth concurred with Brown: ''I couldn't agree with you more. And it's kind of a sad commentary, that, you know, if someone is out carousing every night, the Joe Namath thing, or whatever, they're American heroes, and Tim Tebow, who's working in missions in Asia somewhere, is a guy that we're going to vilify.''

458-508 – Calls – Parents and Coaches, how have you taught your athletes to pray about sports and competition?  Is it improper to ask the Lord for a hit, a touchdown, a goal, a block, or a victory?  What do you pray for?  How does this relate, if at all, to how we pray before surgical procedures, interviews, exams, battles, etc.?

• One of the best prayers I have ever heard is this one, given before an exam by a wise professor, "Lord, may these students remember all they have studied, and perform as well as they have practiced."  Just excellent.  Also addresses the "choking" issue.

• There's a difference between "losing" and "getting beat."  In losing, you make a mistake, either physical or mental.  However, when you "get beat," it could be a flawless performance, even a personal best, but your opponent outperformed you.  There is shame in losing, but no shame in getting beat.

25% of Americans call themselves Catholic.

10% of all US Catholics in 1987 were Hispanic, today they are 30%.

45% of all Catholics between 18-31 are Hispanic.

88% say "how a person lives is more important than whether he or she is Catholic."

86% say "you can disagree with aspects of church teachings and still remain loyal to the church."

40% say "you can be a good Catholic without believing that in Mass, the bread and wine really become the body and blood of Christ," — a core doctrine of Catholicism.

From 1987 to 2011, weekly mass attendance has dropped from 44% to 31%, while monthly attendance has increased from 25% to 47%.

40% say they don't go to Mass more often because "they are not very religious."

The church's opposition to the death penalty, same-sex marriage and permitting priests to marry "has not persuaded a majority of Catholics," says Tom Roberts, editor of the National Catholic Reporter and author of a new book on Catholic community life, The Emerging Church.

"When it comes to questions of abortion, non-marital sex, and homosexuality," more than half of Catholics, including those most highly committed to the church in their personal practices, say it's their own moral views, not those of church leaders, that matter, says survey co-author Michele Dillon, chair of the sociology department at the University of New Hampshire.

"They see this as their church and they won't be exiled because there is a doctrine they disagree with," Dillon says. "To be Catholic, even for the highly committed, is to keep the bishops at arm's length. The bishops have lost their credibility to be pastoral and spiritual leaders."

This shows up in Catholics' responses on questions related to the sexual abuse scandal, which exploded in the USA in 2002:

• 7% of Catholics say they personally know someone who was a victim of abuse.

• 12% say they know a priest accused of abuse.

• 83% say the issue has hurt church leaders' political credibility at least somewhat.

• 77% say it has hurt priests' ability to meet parishioners' spiritual or pastoral needs.

• Only 29% say the bishops have done a good or excellent job in handling the issue.

//
