400-408 – • Las Vegas Now (12/05/08) O.J. Simpson and C.J. Stewart Sentenced.
Former football great O.J. Simpson will spend anywhere from nine to 33 years in prison and his co-defendant, Clarence C.J. Stewart will spend 7.5 to 27 years for their roles in a Las Vegas armed robbery case.
Clark County District Court Judge Jackie Glass sentenced Simpson Friday after saying he is arrogant and ignorant. She says the evidence against him is overwhelming. "I can't ignore that the behavior on September 13 was reckless," Glass said.
Earlier, Simpson apologized and told the judge he is sorry about trying to retrieve memorabilia that he said belonged to him. He appeared ready to break down in tears during a rambling, 5-minute declaration.
"This is the first time I had the opportunity to catch the guys red-handed who had been stealing from my family," Simpson said.

(1:02) Judge Jackie Glass makes it clear this is only about the breaking and entering case, not any previous cases, and she says she can't ignore his reckless behavior of September 13, 2007 in Las Vegas.

428-437 – Jean Twenge, associate professor of Psychology at San Diego State University and author of Generation Me: Why Today's Young Americans Are More Confident, Assertive, Entitled - and More Miserable Than Ever Before (generationme.org), on how to handle your teenagers. The book relies upon her 13 years of research and the responses of 1.3 million young people. "Generation Me" refers to anyone born between 1970 and 1999, so they'd be between 9 and 38 today, and she suggests they be called "iGen." "Gen X" refers to those born between 1961 and 1981 (those 27 to 47), and "Millennials" often describes those born after 1981 (those 26 or younger).
What is the book about? We live in a time when high self-esteem is encouraged from childhood, when young people have more freedom and independence than ever, but also far more depression, anxiety, cynicism, and loneliness. Today's young people have been raised to aim for the stars at a time when it is more difficult than ever to get into college, find a good job, and afford a house. Their expectations are very high just as the world is becoming more competitive, so there's a huge clash between their expectations and reality. More than any other generation in history, the children of Baby Boomers are disappointed by what they find when they arrive at adulthood. Generation Me will give Boomers new insight into their offspring, and help those in their teens, twenties, and thirties finally make sense of their generation.
Consider how pervasive our Culture of Self is in America:
* Worried about how to act in a social situation? "Just be yourself."
* What's the good thing about your alcoholism/drug addiction/murder conviction? "I learned a lot about myself."
* Concerned about your performance? "Believe in yourself." (Often followed by "and anything is possible.")
* Should you buy the new pair of shoes or get the nose ring? "Yes, express yourself."
* Why should you leave the unfulfilling relationship/quit the boring job/tell off your mother-in-law? "You have to respect yourself."
* Trying to get rid of a bad habit? "Be honest with yourself."
* Confused about the best time to date or get married? "You have to love yourself before you can love someone else."
* Should you express your opinion? "Yes, stand up for yourself."

Alan Kazdin, a professor of psychology and child psychiatry at Yale University, believes that schools that veer away from giving children the grades they have earned even when it's a zero or an "F" aren't doing anyone any good. He says, "Children aren't going to gain from ambiguous information regarding their grades. The fact is children are failing yet we don't want to call it that," said Kazdin. "It's this whole notion that everyone's a winner and everyone gets a trophy." Kazdin argues that children are perceptive enough that they will eventually realize they aren't doing well in school whether teachers give them "F"s or not, and that hiding their true level of achievement will only confuse them further. "The task is to change the reality, not the labeling of it," he said.

544-554 – Eric Sohlgren, an attorney with Payne and Fears in Irvine (paynefears.com), argued back in October before the California Supreme Court on behalf of conservative St. James Church in Newport Beach and against Bishop John Bruno and his pro-gay Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles that's seeking to seize their property. The decision is due before the end of the year and will affect every church in California that owns property. And, there's news this week that 700 non-gay churches will be leaving the pro-gay U.S. Episcopal Church and Anglican Church of Canada to form a conservative denomination that believes the Bible. You can view the oral argument at www.calchannel.com, look in the archives. At stake is whether a secular judge can rule any church is a member of an hierarchical church organization, if so they have the authority and ownership over any of it's denomination churches. This could apply to all churches, even Calvary Chapels, Saddleback!

• With 77 million members worldwide, the Anglican Communion is the third largest Christian group behind the Roman Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox churches. The Episcopal Church is a subset of the Anglican Communion and has 2.1 million members (or 3%) in the US. 22 of the 38 Anglican provinces around the world, however, have changed their relationship with the liberal-leaning US Episcopal Church that has openly embraced gay ordination and gay marriage. Only less than 10 [?] of the 7,300 Episcopal parishes in the US have joined the 22 Anglican provinces in rejecting the growing liberalism of the American Episcopal Church. Three are in Southern California: 1,200 member St. James in Newport Beach (www.steadfastinfaith.org) , St. David's in North Hollywood, and All Saints in Long Beach. All three have left the national Episcopal Church and joined the conservative American Anglican Council under Anglican Bishop Evans Kisekka of the Diocese of Luweero in Uganda.

Salvation Army officers must devote full time to Army work. An officer who marries must marry another Salvation Army officer or leave his or her officer status. Married captains and majors will individually carry the rank applicable to their own length of service, not that of their spouse. In case of married officers, the conferred ranks of lieutenant colonel, colonel and commissioner will be held jointly. As ordained ministers of the gospel, they are authorized to perform marriage ceremonies, funeral services, and infant dedications. They also provide counseling and consolation to the bereaved.

• "The United States should be less concerned that terrorists will become biologists and far more concerned that biologists will become terrorists," the report states.
• "The biological threat is greater than the nuclear; the acquisition of deadly pathogens, and their weaponization and dissemination in aerosol form, would entail fewer technical hurdles than the theft or production of weapons-grade uranium or plutonium and its assembly into an improvised nuclear device," states the report.
• Study chairman Graham said anthrax remains the most likely biological weapon. However, he told the AP that contagious diseases — like the flu strain that killed 40 million at the beginning of the 20th century — are looming threats. That virus has been recreated in scientific labs, and there remains no inoculation to protect against it if is stolen and released.
• Al Qaeda remains the only terrorist group judged to be actively intent on conducting a nuclear attack against the United States, the report notes. It is not yet capable of building such a weapon and has yet to obtain one. But that could change if a nuclear weapons engineer or scientist were recruited to Al Qaeda's cause, the report warns. The report says the potential nexus of terrorism, nuclear and biological weapons is especially acute in Pakistan. "Were one to map terrorism and weapons of mass destruction today, all roads would intersect in Pakistan," the report states.
