400-408Herb London, the president of the Hudson Institute (hudson.org) in New York and author of the new book America's Secular Challenge: The Rise of a New National Religion, on the new paganism – a form of extreme secularism that is both at war with the West and incapable of resisting radical Islam.
"In particular, I hope to demonstrate," he writes, "that our culture's increasing commitment to the tenets of radical secularism undermines our resolve to oppose a fanatical foe on the world stage." As he argues elsewhere, "[t]he question is whether radical secularism offers a sufficiently robust alternative to religion — robust enough, that is, to nurture our allegiance to the core values of Western civilization at a time when those values are under siege not only from the external threat of radical Islam, but also from the internal threats of spiritual fecklessness and moral anemia." No, it does not, is his sobering reply, which makes his latest publication a must read.
London identifies five developments in our time that have paved the way for the ascendancy of radical secularism. They include the rise of multiculturalism; the decay of traditional religion; the degeneration of the liberal virtue of tolerance into an unwillingness to discriminate (relativism, in other words); transnationalism, which is "the effort to reduce or eliminate the national heritage of European states through continental harmonization" — and a phenomenon creeping into American life; and "a loss of existential confidence that is at the same time a failure of nerve."
[My summary:  Multiculturalism, Secularism, Relativism, Transnationalism, Passivism]
Radical secularists seek to banish religion entirely from the public square. But what do they believe in private? In an important chapter London delineates their six central principles, what he calls the "articles of a possible secularist catechism." Listen closely, and we can hear several of them reverberate in this presidential election season.  The first doctrine is that "[t]ruth is subjective, relative, or contextual." Next is the assertion that [r]ationality can solve moral and ontological questions about man's nature," followed closely by the notion that a "rational government is freed from the limits traditionally imposed on its purview through the attainment of technical knowledge. Man's eternal problems, including the plight of the poor, can be solved through a welfare state based on the redistribution of wealth." The fourth article of faith holds that "[s]ince we are all children of the globe, subject to the same rationality, national loyalty and patriotism are dangerous anachronisms." The fifth asserts that the "most important goal one can seek is self-transformation, what the psychologist Abraham Maslow called 'self-actualization." The last dogma stipulates that "[d]iscrimination is the great bugbear of social intercourse."
[My summary:  "Truth is subjective" (relativism), "the rational trumps the moral" (scientism), "the rational state is the welfare state" (socialism), "patriotic nationalism is dangerous" (transnationalism), and "in the name of tolerance, we must be intolerant of those who are intolerant"]

Joni & Friends'  "Wheels For The World" Fundraiser  888-799-49-99

"This Christmas, help us provide the gift of mobility to a disabled person in a foreign land for just $150!  So far, Joni Eareckson Tada and her ministry Wheels for the World have provided 52,342 customized wheelchairs to the disabled in 102 countries.  Right now, you can help her place one more wheelchair into the life of someone disabled – giving them the gift of mobility – and you'll also be giving them the Gospel of Jesus Christ because along with every customized wheelchair is a Bible in their native language – you can do all of this for just $150 this Christmas by calling (888) 799-49-99."

Joni is a quadriplegic, unable to use her hands and confined to a wheelchair since her diving accident in 1967.  However, she's the least "disabled" disabled person I know.  She's written 35 books, over a million people a week hear her "Joni & Friends" daily 5-minute broadcast, her paintings (done with a paint brush between her teeth) are sought by collectors all over the world, and she's an accomplished vocalist!  How's that for being "disabled?"  She and her husband Ken have been happily married since 1982.
The World Health Organization estimates that there are 18 million disabled people around the world who need wheelchairs immediately.  But the cost of a wheelchair in many parts of the world is equivalent to a year's wages, and that makes it impossible for nearly every one of these 18 million disabled to ever buy one.  Often living in isolation and lacking simple mobility, the disabled are cut off from the world, and tragically, they're also even cut off from the local church.  As a result, many never hear the gospel or experience Christ's love.
Each wheelchair is customized by a licensed physical therapist to fit each recipient.  These are not dropped on a dock and distributed as a one-size-fits-all solution, each one is personalized – often taking up to 6 hours of work to customize just one chair.
Wheels for the World changes hearts and lives – and communities all over the world!  They don't just drop in and drop off wheelchairs – they go back year after year to refit and follow up, to serve alongside local churches that provide follow up long after the team leaves.  Their commitment is long and deep.  At Joni and Friends, they don't say "goodbye," they say "We'll be back – see you soon!"
Wheels for the World, a ministry of Joni Eareckson Tada (joniandfriends.org/pg_wheelchair.php), aims to meet the physical and spiritual needs of the disabled around the world by providing wheelchairs and sharing the love of Jesus Christ.  They connect the disabled with the church by improving disability awareness and by training local churches in a variety of disability ministries.
By the end of 2008, Wheels for the World will have distributed 52,342 wheelchairs to 102 countries and trained hundreds of ministry and community leaders, including people with disabilities.  As a result, many have placed their trust in Christ, are experiencing new life and purpose with their new mobility, and disability ministry is growing all over the world.
In India, where monkey and snake gods are worshipped, WFTW team members take the Light of Jesus Christ into neighborhoods where the taboos of religion and caste-discrimination against the disabled are broken – and replaced by glorious access to God.  The smiles and joy on the faces of recipients say it best!
Wheels for the World currently restores wheelchairs in 17 prisons in 13 states.  Inmates restore used wheelchairs to like-new condition, learning to work together, perfect basic mechanical skills and produce a product they can be proud of.  Cons are often moved to tears when they see a photo of a little boy or girl getting a wheelchair of their very own for the very first time.

Call 888-799-49-99 to give the gift of mobility – a customized wheelchair – for just $150.00.

413-423Vern Poythress
Regarding the three millennial views, Poythress has said, "Where the millennial views disagree, only one can ultimately be right. But I believe that all three major positions have some insights. Premillennialists typically emphasize the fervent hope that we should have for the return of Christ. Amillennialists typically emphasize the reign of Christ now (Ephesians 1:21). Postmillennialists typically emphasize that we should be optimistic about the power of the gospel to bring people to Christ and transform their lives. As more and more people come to know him, the effects of the transformation spread to society as well."

Today we're partnering with the ministry of Angel Tree, a ministry that provides Christmas presents and the love of Jesus to children of prisoners all across the country.  Last year, 450,000 children were given gifts, that's about one-third of all the 1.5 million children of incarcerated adults in the United States.  Did you know 10 million young people know what it's like to have at least one parent incarcerated?  Statistically, these are the most at-risk children in our country, and your gift can maybe change that.
Your gift of $50 will provide gifts to 4 of these children, and $100 will provide 8 children with gifts.
And, for each gift of $50, Angel Tree will send you their 2008 Edition Angel Tree Christmas ornament for you to put on your tree this Christmas!
You can also donate your used car, truck, boat or RV to Cars for Causes, who will change it into cash and send it to Angel Tree.  When you call, just tell them know you want to donate a vehicle and they'll set it up!

400-408 – • Las Vegas Now (12/05/08) O.J. Simpson and C.J. Stewart Sentenced.
Former football great O.J. Simpson will spend anywhere from nine to 33 years in prison and his co-defendant, Clarence C.J. Stewart will spend 7.5 to 27 years for their roles in a Las Vegas armed robbery case.
Clark County District Court Judge Jackie Glass sentenced Simpson Friday after saying he is arrogant and ignorant. She says the evidence against him is overwhelming. "I can't ignore that the behavior on September 13 was reckless," Glass said.
Earlier, Simpson apologized and told the judge he is sorry about trying to retrieve memorabilia that he said belonged to him. He appeared ready to break down in tears during a rambling, 5-minute declaration.
"This is the first time I had the opportunity to catch the guys red-handed who had been stealing from my family," Simpson said.

(1:02) Judge Jackie Glass makes it clear this is only about the breaking and entering case, not any previous cases, and she says she can't ignore his reckless behavior of September 13, 2007 in Las Vegas.

Chorus:  "When I grow up I wanna be famous, I wanna be a star, I wanna be in movies.  When I grow up, I wanna see the world, drive nice cars, I wanna have boobies.  When I grow up, I wanna see me, Me on TV, People know me, Be on magazines.  When I grow up, Fresh and clean, Number one chick, Wanna step out, On the scene."
428-437Jean Twenge, associate professor of Psychology at San Diego State University and author of Generation Me:  Why Today's Young Americans Are More Confident, Assertive, Entitled - and More Miserable Than Ever Before (generationme.org), on how to handle your teenagers.  The book relies upon her 13 years of research and the responses of 1.3 million young people.  "Generation Me" refers to anyone born between 1970 and 1999, so they'd be between 9 and 38 today, and she suggests they be called "iGen."  "Gen X" refers to those born between 1961 and 1981 (those 27 to 47), and "Millennials" often describes those born after 1981 (those 26 or younger).
What is the book about?  We live in a time when high self-esteem is encouraged from childhood, when young people have more freedom and independence than ever, but also far more depression, anxiety, cynicism, and loneliness. Today's young people have been raised to aim for the stars at a time when it is more difficult than ever to get into college, find a good job, and afford a house. Their expectations are very high just as the world is becoming more competitive, so there's a huge clash between their expectations and reality. More than any other generation in history, the children of Baby Boomers are disappointed by what they find when they arrive at adulthood. Generation Me will give Boomers new insight into their offspring, and help those in their teens, twenties, and thirties finally make sense of their generation.
Consider how pervasive our Culture of Self is in America:
* Worried about how to act in a social situation? "Just be yourself."
* What's the good thing about your alcoholism/drug addiction/murder conviction? "I learned a lot about myself."
* Concerned about your performance? "Believe in yourself." (Often followed by "and anything is possible.")
* Should you buy the new pair of shoes or get the nose ring? "Yes, express yourself."
* Why should you leave the unfulfilling relationship/quit the boring job/tell off your mother-in-law? "You have to respect yourself."
* Trying to get rid of a bad habit? "Be honest with yourself."
* Confused about the best time to date or get married? "You have to love yourself before you can love someone else."
* Should you express your opinion? "Yes, stand up for yourself."

Alan Kazdin, a professor of psychology and child psychiatry at Yale University, believes that schools that veer away from giving children the grades they have earned even when it's a zero or an "F" aren't doing anyone any good.  He says, "Children aren't going to gain from ambiguous information regarding their grades.  The fact is children are failing yet we don't want to call it that," said Kazdin. "It's this whole notion that everyone's a winner and everyone gets a trophy."  Kazdin argues that children are perceptive enough that they will eventually realize they aren't doing well in school whether teachers give them "F"s or not, and that hiding their true level of achievement will only confuse them further.  "The task is to change the reality, not the labeling of it," he said.

544-554Eric Sohlgren, an attorney with Payne and Fears in Irvine (paynefears.com), argued back in October before the California Supreme Court on behalf of conservative St. James Church in Newport Beach and against Bishop John Bruno and his pro-gay Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles that's seeking to seize their property.  The decision is due before the end of the year and will affect every church in California that owns property.  And, there's news this week that 700 non-gay churches will be leaving the pro-gay U.S. Episcopal Church and Anglican Church of Canada to form a conservative denomination that believes the Bible.  You can view the oral argument at www.calchannel.com, look in the archives. At stake is whether a secular judge can rule any church is a member of an hierarchical church organization, if so they have the authority and ownership over any of it's denomination churches.  This could apply to all churches, even Calvary Chapels, Saddleback!
• With 77 million members worldwide, the Anglican Communion is the third largest Christian group behind the Roman Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox churches.  The Episcopal Church is a subset of the Anglican Communion and has 2.1 million members (or 3%) in the US.  22 of the 38 Anglican provinces around the world, however, have changed their relationship with the liberal-leaning US Episcopal Church that has openly embraced gay ordination and gay marriage.  Only less than 10 [?] of the 7,300 Episcopal parishes in the US have joined the 22 Anglican provinces in rejecting the growing liberalism of the American Episcopal Church.  Three are in Southern California: 1,200 member St. James in Newport Beach (www.steadfastinfaith.org) , St. David's in North Hollywood, and All Saints in Long Beach.  All three have left the national Episcopal Church and joined the conservative American Anglican Council under Anglican Bishop Evans Kisekka of the Diocese of Luweero in Uganda.

Salvation Army officers must devote full time to Army work. An officer who marries must marry another Salvation Army officer or leave his or her officer status. Married captains and majors will individually carry the rank applicable to their own length of service, not that of their spouse. In case of married officers, the conferred ranks of lieutenant colonel, colonel and commissioner will be held jointly. As ordained ministers of the gospel, they are authorized to perform marriage ceremonies, funeral services, and infant dedications. They also provide counseling and consolation to the bereaved.

400-408Pat Fagan, Director of the Center for Family and Religion at the Family Research Council, has examined the relationship between family, marriage and religious practice against our primary social indicators in their new stud Mapping America Project (mappingamericaproject.org).
If the state of Congress, Hollywood, and Wall Street isn't proof enough, a new study shows that America has become indifferent to personal ethics. Surveying almost 30,000 students, the Josephson Institute found that the nation is raising a throng of lawbreakers.  Nearly than two-thirds (64%) of teens said they cheated on tests; another 30% admitted to stealing from a store; and 42% said they sometimes lie to save money. Despite this, 93% are "satisfied" with their level of integrity.  Although researchers warn of the consequences to the culture, what we've already witnessed from the nation's rich and powerful suggests that America is reaping the moral apathy she's sown.
As FRC's own Dr. Pat Fagan has shown in his "Mapping America" project, there is a remedy for this crisis of character -- raising children in intact homes that worship weekly.  In the last three editions of "Mapping," Dr. Fagan demonstrates that kids who live with their biological or adoptive parents and go to church frequently exhibit the fewest behavioral problems.  To get these two-page gems on the positive impact of religion and family on society, please visit www.mappingamericaproject.org and subscribe.
• AP (12/01/08) Students lie, cheat, steal, but say they're good.  The Josephson Institute surveyed 29,760 high school students at 100 randomly selected high schools nationwide and found:
• 35% of high school boys, and 26% of high school girls, admit to stealing from a store in the past year.
• 26% of boys, and 14% of girls, admit to stealing from a friend in the past year.
• 49% of boys, and 36% of girls, admit to lying to save money in the past year.
• 83% had lied to a parent about something significant in the past year.
• 64% say they had cheated on a test in the past year.
• 36% say they had used the Internet to plagiarize an assignment in the past year.
•• Yet, 93% say they are satisfied with their personal ethics and character.
•• And, 77% say "when it comes to doing what is right, I am better than most people I know."
