400-408 – • USA Today (7/12/2011) Faith lifts Josh Hamilton after Rangers Ballpark tragedy.

Josh Hamilton says there will be a time and place to meet the family of Shannon Stone, the 39-year-old Brownwood, Texas, firefighter who fell to his death Thursday reaching for a ball Hamilton tossed his way for his 6-year-old son at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

Monday's funeral was neither that time nor place.

"I didn't know Mr. Stone. I don't know his family," Hamilton said Monday, a day before he starts in left field for the American League in the All-Star Game. "I don't feel it's my place to be in an intimate setting such as that.

"But when I feel like the time is right and enough time has passed, I'll definitely reach out and talk to his wife and little boy."

Hundreds of family members, friends and law enforcement personnel attended the memorial service at First United Methodist Church in Brownwood.

Hamilton said his Christian faith, which helped him overcome alcohol and drug addiction to become one of baseball's brightest stars, has buoyed him and his family this week. He said his family continues to pray for the Stone family.

"This is life," Hamilton said. "There are tragedies, things that happen that you have no control over and you don't understand them. One of them is standing in front of your maker.

"Maybe I was a little more prepared to handle a situation like this. Still, it doesn't mean it doesn't hurt and affect you. It was just a random act of kindness that turned tragic." //

• IBD (7/8/2011) Josh Hamilton 'Distraught': Can He Overcome Rangers Fan's Death?

// But how does a man with past demons as strong as Hamilton's, react to such a traumatic event? Will Hamilton be able to sleep at night knowing he indirectly caused the premature death of a Texas firefighter?

Hamilton has claimed to have avoided alcohol and drugs since 2005, though he did have a very public relapse in 2009. Sports blog Deadspin obtained photos of a shirtless Hamilton at a Tempe, Ariz., bar and Hamilton admitted he had relapsed in his sobriety.

Can he resist those major temptations when times get toughest? One would certainly hope so, as Hamilton seems to be a good guy, but traumatic events like these can have long lasting impacts on people. Simply seeing a person die in front of you could cause issues, but thinking that you might be the main reason has to be very tough to handle. //

413-423 – Calls – Sometimes the best intentions yield the worst consequences.  Have you ever intended something good, and it yielded something bad?  How would you console Josh Hamilton, if you could?  How, specifically, will you be praying for the Stone and Hamilton families?   How have you "made it through" a tragedy in your life – an untimely death, an injury, a severed relationship, something financial, etc.?  Those of you who have lost a wife or a husband, or a mom or a dad, or even a child, how did you "make it through?"  What has God taught you through your journey through the dark valleys?  One thing for sure, you never know when your time's up, so tell those you love how much you love them.
