428-437 – (2:23 – Dennis Prager intro) Rabbi Joe Telushkin (josephtelushkin.com) was a childhood friend of Dennis Prager, they went to Columbia together, and Dennis said he's knowledgeable, wonderful, and hilarious. Rabbi Joe is the author of many books on Jewish theology, philosophy, and history, and has written several novels, popular articles, and television and film scripts. But his Jewish Literacy: The Most Important Things to Know About the Jewish Religion, Its People and Its History has been the most widely read book on Judaism of the past two decades, and his monumental two-volume A Code of Jewish Ethics has rapidly risen to the pinnacle of its field. Rabbi Joe is the spiritual leader of the Synagogue for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles, but he lives in New York City with his wife, writer Deborah Telushkin, and their four children. Plus, there's a bunch of YouTubes of Rabbi Joe teaching on a variety of subjects available online.
Today we talk about three of his passions, the Hebrew Bible, Passover and Jewish Humor – sourcing his Biblical Literacy: The Most Important People, Events, and Ideas of the Hebrew Bible, and his book on humor, Jewish Humor: What the Best Jewish Jokes Say About the Jews.
Rabbi Joe walks us through some of the elements of a seder: the unleavened matzo, the bitter herb mahror, the four cups of wine, the special cup in the middle of the table which belongs to Elijah, the manish-tanna recited by the youngest literate child present, the tradition of hiding and then finding the hidden manna, and the centerpiece of the ritual, reciting the telling of the story of the Exodus.
