In Written In Blood: The Story of the Haitian People 1492-1971 (1978), authors Robert and Nancy Henri examined the historical record of the Bois-Caiman meeting and found no evidence of a pact with the devil. They conclude that Bookman sought the help of God, not Satan. They include the following synthesis of Bookman's prayer arranged from many oral traditions:
