512-523 – • MSNBC (7/20/09) How much homework is too much? Many districts are recommending 10 minutes a night per grade. Psychology professor Harris Cooper of Duke University says the evidence points to little or no connection between the amount of time spent on homework and academic achievement, especially before junior high or middle school. However, practice-style assignments in elementary school, such as learning numbers, places, and vocabulary, do help improve unit test scores. Teachers and parents, how much homework is the right amount? Should all the kids in the classroom be given the same amount regardless of skill? Does your child have too much, too little, or just about the right amount of homework? Kids, do you agree? Teachers, do you have time to grade all the homework? How much of it is just busy-work?
