• Stu Bykofsky, Philly.com (6/4/09) Vigilantism beats up on justice.
Remember when you were a kid, you'd fall and skin your knee and a scab would form?  Mom would tell you not to touch the scab, picking at it would be bad for you, but sometimes it would itch so much you just couldn't help yourself. You'd scratch the scab, getting a moment of relief, then it might tear open, bleed and expose you to infection.  Tuesday afternoon, the angry neighbors of Kensington scratched at a scab named Jose Carrasquillo, a suspected child rapist, and put him in the hospital in critical condition.  I can understand how good that must have felt. I'd want to take a softball bat to a child rapist. It would be a good thing to do, but not the right thing to do.  Carrasquillo was just a suspect. He was not even charged, let alone convicted.  Picking at this scab - kicking the bejabbers out of a suspect - feels good, but exposes us to an infection, vigilantism.
(:31) RC&TD 1, Attorney Rocco Cipparone with Fox 29's Thomas Drayton on "The 5 Spot" discuss the vigilante-style attack on the "person of interest" in the rape of an 11-year-old girl on her way to school in Kensington on Monday.  About a dozen guys attacked 26-year-old Jose Carrasquillo who was wanted on a bench warrant and has 17 prior arrests.  He was also charged with an attempted rape in 2002, but charges were later dropped.  The dozen "vigilantes" will be splitting an $11,500 reward.  The suspect is being investigated for other assaults, including that of another little girl who was groped in the same neighborhood just an hour beforehand.  Cipparone is asked, "Is this type of vigilante crime justified?"
(:14) RC&TD 2, "Will they be prosecuted?"
(:25) RC&TD 3, "The difference between citizen's arrest and vigilante justice?"
(:14) RC&TD 4, "Is there ever a time when vigilante justified is justified?"
(:20) RC&TD 5, "Do you think rewards play a role in vigilante justice?"
(:35) RC&TD 6, "Does pursuing vigilante justice lead to the breakdown of law and order?"
413-423Have you ever been involved with stopping a criminal or a "bad guy"?  Ever make a citizen's arrest?  Ever been saved by a "good guy"?  Are there still "knights on white horses" out there?  Is chivalry dead?  Ladies, ever have a gentleman intervene to "preserve your honor" or remove a jerk that was bugging you?  Guys, ever have some "upper classman" intervene when a bully was harassing you at school?  Those of you in law enforcement, what have you seen?  What do you think of "conscientious citizens"?
