400-408Steve Blackwell (877-452-6896, steve.blackwell@usarec.army.mil) a Chaplain in the U.S. Army, is looking for new Chaplain recruits!  Steve was pastor of Greenville United Methodist Church in Joelton, TN, then 9/11 happened, and he joined the Army.  He's got a bachelor's in math from Middle Tennessee State University and an M.Div. from Vanderbilt.  He served for 6 months as the Chaplain at the Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan.  He and his wife Diane still live in Tennessee, and enjoy three adult children.  History of the chaplaincy?  What's the role and importance of the Army Chaplain?

428-437Kirk Cameron (kirkcameron.com) former star of Growing Pains, and now the big star of Fireproof, which comes out on DVD Tuesday, January 27, 2009.  Fireproof is the third film produced by Sherwood Church in Albany, Georgia, through their Sherwood Pictures, you'll remember Flywheel from 2004, and Facing the Giants in 2006, and now, of course, Fireproof in 2008.  Fireproof has earned more than $33 million on a half-million dollar budget, and currently ranks as the second highest-grossing Christian film of all time behind The Passion.  Kirk plays the lead, Caleb Holt, who believes "never leave your partner behind," but though he can rescue strangers, he can't save his marriage.  Interestingly, Kirk volunteered to do the movie for free, asking that any money be donated to his camp for terminally ill children and their families Camp Firefly.  Churches who get the DVD will have the right to show it as a movie at their church, effectively turning their sanctuary into a theater, and do so for a whole year.  And, The Love Dare book written by assistant pastors Alex and Stephen Kendrick, which saved the marriage in movie, has now sold 1.3 million copies.  The Love Dare is a 40-day biblically-based challenge that dares you to unconditionally love your spouse.
443-452Matt McCormick, CEO of the Christian Lawyers of America (christianlawyersofamerica.com 888-702-0111), with advice for those with mortgage and financial challenges.  They'll soon be hosting Christian Financial Restoration Workshops at churches across the southland, if interested in hosting one, call them.

• Bob Woodward (1/14/09) Detainee Tortured, Says U.S. Official.  Susan J. Crawford, the person hired by Defense Secretary Robert Gates to oversee whether detainees will go to trial, said we tortured Mohammed al-Qahtani, the 20th hijacker.
Crawford, 61, said the combination of the interrogation techniques, their duration and the impact on Qahtani's health led to her conclusion. "The techniques they used were all authorized, but the manner in which they applied them was overly aggressive and too persistent. . . . You think of torture, you think of some horrendous physical act done to an individual. This was not any one particular act; this was just a combination of things that had a medical impact on him, that hurt his health. It was abusive and uncalled for. And coercive. Clearly coercive. It was that medical impact that pushed me over the edge" to call it torture, she said.
"For 160 days his only contact was with the interrogators," said Crawford, who personally reviewed Qahtani's interrogation records and other military documents. "Forty-eight of 54 consecutive days of 18-to-20-hour interrogations. Standing naked in front of a female agent. Subject to strip searches. And insults to his mother and sister."
At one point he was threatened with a military working dog named Zeus, according to a military report. Qahtani "was forced to wear a woman's bra and had a thong placed on his head during the course of his interrogation" and "was told that his mother and sister were whores." With a leash tied to his chains, he was led around the room "and forced to perform a series of dog tricks," the report shows.
