400-408 – Dr. R.W. Mackey teaches in the Business department here at The Master's College, and over the past 30 years has held a number of administrative and faculty posts as well as starting a number of small business ventures.  Is there a Biblical approach to managerial studies?  In this economy, do you see many people going back to school to strengthen their resumes?
413-423 – • Fox News (1/15/09) 22-Year-Old Sells Virginity Online -- and Feds Can't Do a Thing to Stop Her.  A real way to "get rich quick?"  Natalie Dylan, not her real name, is 22, a college graduate, and is selling her virginity online through Dennis Hoff of the Moonlight Bunny Ranch brothel in Nevada, and so far, over 10,000 bidders have participated, with the top bid right now at $3.7 million.  Law enforcement says it's legal since she's over 18 and it's consensual, and it's legal to advertise a service where it is illegal if it will be performed where it is legal.
"It's a First Amendment issue. You can advertise goods or services that are illegal where they're advertised but legal where their performed," said Marc Randazza, an attorney specializing in first amendment law. "What's she's advertising is as legal as toast with the crust cut off where she is."
(1:07) #1 Natalie Dylan, "It's a case study on the dichotomous nature of virginity and prostitution, built off a Peruvian woman that got $1.5 million for her virginity… I try to stay away from the message boards because there's a lot of negativity out there."  She's doing premature research for her master's thesis.

(:28) #3 Is it legal?  Isn't this prostitution?  You aren't afraid this first time?
(1:18) #4 You're not afraid?  You don't want it to be special?  It's not like the highest bidder on e-Bay?
428-437 – Doesn't this at least put a bottom value to your virginity?  Do you think guys will now appreciate it more, since they now know what it's worth?  This could back fire!  Let's teach our young people how truly valuable, literally how priceless, their virginity is.

"Every time you exhale, you exhale air that has 4 percent carbon dioxide. To say that that's a pollutant just boggles my mind. What used to be science has turned into a cult. . . . All the evidence I see is that the current warming of the climate is just like past warmings. In fact, it's not as much as past warmings yet, and it probably has little to do with carbon dioxide, just like past warmings had little to do with carbon dioxide. . . . Science is one of the great triumphs of humankind, and I hate to see it dragged through the mud in an episode like this" -- William Happer, former chief scientist at the Energy Department and the Cyrus Fogg Brackett Professor of Physics at Princeton, quoted in the Daily Princetonian on the rush to pin climate change on human industrial activity.
Washington state law does not bar teachers from having sex with 18-year-old students.  That's the decision of a three-judge panel of the Washington Court of Appeals, which on Tuesday ordered the dismissal of a case brought against Hoquiam High School's former choir teacher.
The teacher, Matthew Hirschfelder, was charged with first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor. He challenged a judge's refusal to dismiss his case. The appeals court unanimously agreed that the state law is vague, and that the Legislature only intended to forbid sexual contact between school employees and students who are 16 or 17.
Hirschfelder was 33 in 2006, at the time of the alleged relationship with the young woman. He resigned the next year.

400-408 – • AP (1/13/09) Gay bishop invited to pre-inauguration event in DC.  New Hampshire Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson will deliver the invocation at the "We Are One" event at the Lincoln Memorial on Sunday that will kick off the inaugural festivities.
The pulpit is getting even more crowded at the Inauguration festivities next week. After miffing gay and lesbian groups by picking pro-Proposition 8 Rev. Rick Warren to offer the invocation on his big day, President-elect Obama is giving homosexuals a turn in the limelight. In a surprise announcement, it appears the Obama team is trying to soothe the ruffled feathers over Warren's role by asking Bishop Gene Robinson, an open homosexual, to kick off the We Are One event on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial January 19.

"It is also an indication of the new president's commitment to being the President of all the people. "...[I]t will be my great honor to be there representing... all of us in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community" Robinson said. Robinson will deliver the invocation at Sunday's ceremony, which both Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden are scheduled to attend. According to the AP, "Robinson said he doesn't yet know what he'll say, but he knows he won't use a Bible. 'While that is a holy and sacred text to me, it is not for many Americans,' Robinson said. 'I will be careful not to be especially Christian in my prayer.'"

While the choice of Robinson may be designed to placate angry liberals, the irony of it isn't lost on religious conservatives. The ballyhoo over Pastor Warren's selection was in large part because he was "divisive" in supporting Prop 8. Yet if there was ever a pastor whose actions were divisive it was Gene Robinson who almost single handedly devastated one of America's oldest Christian denominations. Robinson's confirmation in 2003 as the first openly gay Bishop shattered the once-conservative Episcopal Church and created a painful split between the liberal leadership and faithful Anglicans that cost it hundreds of thousands of followers. Robinson says, "I believe in my heart that the church got it wrong about homosexuality." This view, which he emphasized in at least three private meetings with Obama, may be reflective of the next president's ideology, but it's far from mainstream. While liberals may not appreciate Warren's position on marriage, a majority of voters happen to agree with him. Far more states--including California--have banned counterfeit marriage than have ratified it.
413-423 – If Robinson is not going to pray as a Christian or use the Bible, Who is he praying to?  Who is he representing if not a Christian denomination?  Is his identity rooted in his sexual behavior or in his God?  My concern is the attempted redefinition of Christianity, an effort that must be resisted at every opportunity.

• Victor Davis Hanson (1/9/09) Obama: The Great American Hope?
Risks now seen by terrorists and rogue states as unwise during the cowboyish Bush administration may once again seem worth reconsideration in a manner reminiscent of the Clinton years. Talking of soft power, multilateralism, the U.N., dialogue, and restoring our image abroad are all salutary and resonate well in Europe; but to others more nefarious, such calming assurances may send the opposite message that the U.S. is now predictable — and predictably not going to hit hard back when provoked. Deterrence is earned with difficulty and over many years, but it is easily lost in seconds.
What should we then expect? As some point, perhaps in his first few months in office, President Obama, as Joe Biden predicted, will be tested by the rogue oil-producing states. Most — like Iran, Russia, and Venezuela — will soon be facing bankruptcy if oil prices stay flat, as their only source of foreign exchange largely vanishes. Expect all in multifarious ways to test America, in part to humiliate the United States, but more likely simply to cause enough tension to create panic among speculators and restore their windfall profits. Anyone can dream up scenarios — a move on Georgia, a cutoff of natural gas entirely to Europe, a brazen announcement of an Iranian bomb with a dare to Israel to stop it, a suicide attack on a tanker or warship in the Straits of Hormuz, flagrant violation of the Monroe Doctrine by home porting Russian vessels in Venezuela, simultaneous rocket barrages from Lebanon, Gaza, and Syria, etc. For such countries, any disruption is good in the sense that it creates panic, and panic in turn spikes oil prices.

458-508 – Nonie Darwish, author of Cruel and Usual Punishment: The Terrifying Global Implications of Islamic Law (noniedarwish.com)
Born in Cairo, Egypt, Darwish moved to Gaza in the 1950s when her father, Lt. General Mustafa Hafez, was sent by Gamal Abdel Nasser to serve as commander of the Egyptian Army Intelligence in Gaza, which was then occupied by Egypt.  Hafez founded the fedayeen who launched raids across Israel's southern border, that between 1951 and 1956, killed some 400 Israelis. In July 1956 when Nonie was eight years old, her father became the first targeted assassination carried out by the Israeli Defense Forces in response to Fedayeen's attacks, making him a shahid.  During his speech announcing the nationalization of the Suez Canal, Nasser vowed that all of Egypt would take revenge for Hafez's death.  Darwish claims that Nasser asked her and her siblings, "Which one of you will avenge your father's death by killing Jews?"
Darwish explains, "I always blamed Israel for my father's death, because that's what I was taught. I never looked at why Israel killed my father. They killed my father because the fedayeen were killing Israelis. They killed my father because when I was growing up, we had to recite poetry pledging jihad against Israel. We would have tears in our eyes, pledging that we wanted to die. I speak to people who think there was no terrorism against Israel before the '67 war. How can they deny it? My father died in it."

Should we be "encouraging" or "glorifying" single motherhood in the face of all the social costs?
• Where it has been legalized, same-sex marriage decreases the total number of marriages while increasing illegitimacy. Six European nations have had same-sex marriage since the early 90s—and just 2 percent of same-sex couples in these countries ever bother to marry, while there has been a 46 percent increase in out-of-wedlock births. Same-sex couples simply do not marry in significant number when given the legal right to do so, while more heterosexual couples will not bother to get married before having children. In these nations, 70 percent of all births now take place outside of marriage, and among first-time mothers, 80 percent are unmarried. Same-sex marriage will result in fewer total marriages and more children born out of wedlock.
• Both religion and political philosophy recognize that it is for the common good that states preserve, protect and promote successful marriages and healthy families in order to produce the maximum number of healthy children who later become productive citizens. However, since the sexual revolution of the 1960s, we have increased the number of broken families producing damaged children, and these damaged children have burdened both the size and cost of the welfare state.
• The combined effects of the pill, condom distribution, abortion on demand, no-fault divorce and the acceptance of illegitimacy have been socially and economically devastating. Half of all American marriages now end in divorce. One-third of all American children are now born outside of marriage—including one-half of all Hispanic kids and nearly three out of four African-American kids. Half of all urban freshman never graduate high school. Our prisons are overflowing, 80% of inmates grew up with single mothers.  70% of runaways are from single mothers.  Illegitimacy is up 300% since 1970.  As all social science research has proved time and again, illegitimacy begets poverty, poverty begets crime, crime begets social decline and social decline begets higher taxes to pay for the bigger government necessary to care for the social and economic costs associated with the millions of "at risk" children who, disproportionately,  become unproductive citizens.

"Virginity Pledges Don't Stop Teen Sex," screams CBS News. "Virginity pledges don't mean much," adds CNN. "Study questions virginity pledges," says the Chicago Tribune. "Premarital Abstinence Pledges Ineffective, Study Finds," heralds the Washington Post. "Virginity Pledges Fail to Trump Teen Lust in Look at Older Data," reports Bloomberg. And on it goes.
In other words, teens will be teens, and moms or dads who believe that concepts such as restraint or morality have any application today are living in a dream world. Typical was the lead for the CBS News story: "Teenagers who take virginity pledges are no less sexually active than other teens, according to a new study."
Here's the rub: It just isn't true.

But as the protest continued and crowds grew, one woman in a hijab began to shout curses and slurs that shocked Jewish activists in the city, which has a sizable Jewish population.  "Go back to the oven," she shouted, calling for the counter-protesters to die in the manner that the Nazis used to exterminate Jews during the Holocaust.  "You need a big oven, that's what you need," she yelled.
The unidentified woman, who protest organizers said was a Muslim, wasn't the only protester who raised hackles that day. Other demonstrators held signs that said "Nuke Israel," and a number made comparisons to the Holocaust, accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza.
(:23) Protest 12/30/08.  A woman at an anti-Israel rally on 12/30/08 in Ft. Lauderdale calls the Israelis "murderers" and that they should "go steal other lands" and "go back to the ovens."
While 15,000 have died in clashes between the Israelis and Palestinians since 1983, that number is dwarfed by the 70,000 killed in clashes between the Sinhalese Buddhists and Tamil Hindus in Sri Lanka.
The history of displacement among Palestinians hardly makes them unique among the peoples of the world, though they've seized on the term "refugee" as the very essence of their identity. At most 750,000 Palestinian Arabs became refugees after five Arab states simultaneously attacked Israel in 1948, but within the next ten years an even greater number of Jews (800,000) became refugees from persecution in Islamic nations in North Africa in the Middle East and resettled in the Jewish state. At precisely the same moment that Israel won world recognition in 1948, the partition of India and Pakistan led to 14.5 million refugees (and at least 500,000 deaths in the "Independence Riots"). The Lebanon Civil War of 1975-1990 produced 900,000 refugees (according to that tormented nation's own government) and an estimated 200,000 to 250,000 deaths in horrific clashes between Arab Muslims and Arab Christians.

• Dick Morris (1/7/09) Franken's Funny Business.
The recount actually wants to count ballots in twenty-five precincts that would bring the total of votes cast higher than the actual number of people who voted!  In Ramsey County, 177 more votes have been counted than people who voted on Election Day.  The canvassing board, in effect, is admitting that it is counting fraudulent, duplicate ballots!  In some cases absentee ballots, particularly from troops serving overseas, have been counted.  In other cases, not.  One ballot, on which Franken was crossed out and replaced by "Frankenstein" was counted as a Democratic vote.
Apparently, when a ballot was challenged, a copy was made to facilitate examination.  But, in many cases, the canvasser failed to label the ballot as a duplicate.  Then, in the recount, all the ballots were counted, ensuring that the challenged vote was not only counted, but counted twice.
What makes all of this suspicious in the extreme is that each of these errors inured to Franken's advantage and eroded Coleman's election night lead until the Democrat could claim victory.

Today is our 5th Anniversary and the start of our 6th year!
400-408 – • Rasmussen (12/31/08) Americans Closely Divided Over Israel's Gaza Attacks.
Sixty-two percent (62%) of Republicans back Israel's decision to take military action against the Palestinians, but only half as many Democrats (31%) agree. A majority of Democrats (55%) say Israel should have tried to find a diplomatic solution first, a view shared by just 27% of Republicans.
While 75% of Republicans say Israel is an ally of the United States, just 55% of Democrats agree. Seven percent (7%) of Democrats say Israel is an enemy of America, but only one percent (1%) of Republicans say the same. For 21% of Republicans, Israel is somewhere in between, and 28% of Democrats agree.
• Natan Sharansky (1/6/09) How the U.N. Perpetuates the 'Refugee' Problem:  Nowhere on earth do terrorists get so much help from the Free World.  Sharansky is former Deputy Prime Minister of Israel.
Palestinian children are dying today not because of Israeli brutality, but because their own leaders have chosen to use their children as human shields, and their pain as a battering ram against Western sensibilities.
Of course, it is easy to blame Hamas. It is they, after all, who deliberately put their weapons caches in mosques, their rocket launchers in schoolyards, and their command centers in hospitals -- all with the explicit goal of maximizing the tragedy of an Israeli response.
In withdrawing from Gaza, Israel made painful concessions for peace by forcibly removing Jews from their homes. And yet even the Palestinian Authority, the most moderate among Palestinian political groups, would not consider easing their own people's plight in the wake of Israel's compromise. This is because the suffering of the refugees is essential to their broader political struggle.
And so, invariably, the script is played out: Hamas fires its missiles, Israel responds with military force in Gaza, children are killed, their pictures are played countless times on televisions in the West, articles are published saying both sides are evil, and Israel is pressured to stop.
413-423 – Shahar Azani, he is the Consul for Culture, Media and Public Diplomacy at the Israeli Consulate in Los Angeles (israeliconsulatela.org), where in about 15 minutes, there is going to be a rally taking place out front in support of Israel to ask as a counter demonstration to those protesting Israel's defensive action against Hamas.  Drive by and at least honk your horn if you can!  They're at 6380 Wilshire Blvd in LA, between cross streets San Vincente and Crescent Heights.  And, tomorrow, there will be a rally at noon in front of the federal building in Westwood, and you're invited.

428-437 – • Bret Stephens (1/6/09)  An Endgame for Israel.  Do you agree with "rocket for rocket?"
Israel will also have to practice a more consistent policy of deterrence than it has so far done. One option: For every single rocket that falls randomly on Israeli soil, an Israeli missile will hit a carefully selected target in Gaza. Focusing the minds of Hamas on this type of "proportionality" is just the endgame that Israel needs.

Regardless of what Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas may say to Western audiences, his message to the Arab world is that Palestinians should put aside their internal divisions and, as he put it in 2007, "direct our guns against Israeli occupation." To anyone outside Brussels or Foggy Bottom, that cannot be a surprise: Fatah, Abbas's organization, is pledged by its constitution to the destruction of Israel. (See, e.g., Article 12: Fatah's first stated "Goal" is the "Complete liberation of Palestine, and eradication of Zionist economic, political, military and cultural existence"; see also, e.g., Article 19: "Armed struggle is a strategy and not a tactic, and the Palestinian Arab People's armed revolution is a decisive factor in the liberation fight and in uprooting the Zionist existence, and this struggle will not cease unless the Zionist state is demolished and Palestine is completely liberated.")
When we appraise hostile countries, it has become de rigueur in our foreign policy circles to distinguish the "people" (always good) from their nasty governments. So it is with the noble Palestinians. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice insisted in a 2006 interview, for instance, that the "great majority" of them — i.e., upwards of "70 percent" — are "perfectly ready to live side by side with Israel because they just want to live in peace."
This is preposterous. Palestinians are weaned on Jew-hatred through schools and media controlled by the competing factions and other jihadists. Their national heroes are those dedicated to killing Jews, most especially the "martyrs" (or shahid) who self-implode in suicide attacks. It is to be expected, then, that when the public is polled in the actual Palestinian territories, rather than in Condi-world, a very different reality is reflected: About three in four Palestinians deny Israel's right to exist, a figure that soars to over nine in ten when only the fighting-age demographic (between 18 and 25) is considered.
Fighting a defensive war for survival is not a war crime. It is an obligation. It is primarily what governments are created for. To claim otherwise is make a perverse mockery of international law. We must defend Israel full-throatedly on this point. In doing so, we are defending ourselves.

• Gideon Rachman (1/5/09) Israel's self-defeating Gaza offensive.  Should Israel have relaxed the blockade?
Then there are the Palestinians – who will still be Israel's neighbors after the bloodletting has stopped. Israeli official rhetoric suggests that the government hopes a massive attack on Gaza will turn the population against Hamas. But violence against Israelis has always made public opinion there more hawkish. Why should the Palestinians be any different? In their more reflective moments, even senior Israeli politicians recognize that more killing is likely further to radicalize the Palestinians. A columnist in Haaretz, a liberal Israeli paper, recalled this week that Ehud Barak, the defense minister, who is masterminding the attack on Gaza, once told him that if he were a Palestinian "I would join a terror organization".
The Israelis sometimes suggest that their ultimate goal is in fact to displace Hamas, which still refuses to recognize Israel, rather than simply to stop the rockets. But any new Palestinian government that rode to power on the back of Israeli tanks would be maimed from the start.
The Israeli government may acknowledge the force of some of these objections. But its response is that it had no alternative. Hamas is a terrorist organization that forced Israel's hand.
In fact, there was an alternative that was never tried: relax the blockade of Gaza in return for a renewal of the ceasefire that ran out in December. Israel appears to have done the opposite. In November the blockade became harsher, putting serious pressure on the supply of food and fuel into Gaza.
Ending the blockade of Gaza in return for a ceasefire remains the best option – for both humanitarian and strategic reasons.

• With 77 million members worldwide, the Anglican Communion is the third largest Christian group behind the Roman Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox churches.  The Episcopal Church is a subset of the Anglican Communion and has 2.1 million members (or 3%) in the US.  22 of the 38 Anglican provinces around the world, however, have changed their relationship with the liberal-leaning US Episcopal Church that has openly embraced gay ordination and gay marriage.  Only less than 10 [?] of the 7,300 Episcopal parishes in the US have joined the 22 Anglican provinces in rejecting the growing liberalism of the American Episcopal Church.  Three are in Southern California: 1,200 member St. James in Newport Beach (www.steadfastinfaith.org), St. David's in North Hollywood, and All Saints in Long Beach.  All three have left the national Episcopal Church and joined the conservative American Anglican Council under Anglican Bishop Evans Kisekka of the Diocese of Luweero in Uganda.  700 non-gay churches will be leaving the pro-gay U.S. Episcopal Church and Anglican Church of Canada to form a conservative denomination that believes the Bible.
