Views on Hell –

Universalism – the "everybody's in because all religions worship the same God" view.

Christian universalism – the "everybody's in because Jesus died for the whole world even if they don't know it" view.

Evangelical universalism – the "everybody in hell will get a do-over and then hell will be empty" view.  Only Christ-followers are initially "in", and those who are "out" are those who have rejected Christ or have never heard of Him, BUT, hell is only temporary – once you've paid off your sin debt, Jesus somehow will extend another invitation to "get in," of course, everyone will say yes, and so eventually, hell is empty.

Annihilationism – the "God would rather annihilate you than punish you forever" view.  Only Christ-followers are "in", and those who are "out" are those who have rejected Christ or have never heard of Him, BUT, hell is only temporary – once you've paid off your sin debt, Jesus just annihilates you.  Consequently, there's no everlasting punishment of your finite sins, there's just the eternal consequences of your sin, i.e., God just pops you out of existence.

Inclusivism – the "God grades on a curve" view.  Only Christ-followers are "in", and those who are "out" are those who have rejected Christ, BUT God will also allow "in" those who have positively responded to whatever message they got.

Traditionalism – only Christ-followers are "in", and those who are "out" are those who have rejected Christ or who would have rejected Christ had they been given the opportunity to hear via God's Middle Knowledge.

• God's Four Alternatives For Dealing With Evil:  Reform, Second Chance, Annihilate, or Quarantine.

1.  God could reform people.  However, if man is truly free, then God could not cause a person to reform against his will since this would violate human freedom.  Given human freedom, even God cannot guarantee that everyone is reformable.  Skinnerian behavior modification is inhumane in that it is dehumanizing to force a person to change against his will.

C. S. Lewis, God in the Dock (New York: Inspirational Press, 1996), p. 499.  "To be 'cured' against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level with those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.  But to be punished, however severely, because we have deserved it, because we 'ought to have known better', is to be treated as a human person made in God's image."

2.  God could offer people a second chance after death.  But this assumes that God was lax in extending His first chance.  If it were merely a matter of people having "more time," the goodness and long-suffering of God assure that they will have it.  The danger is that the longer a person is in sin, the less she is able to choose the Good. (contra Heb 9:27)

3.  God could annihilate people.  John Stott and Clark Pinnock hold that the most just punishment for evil is to pop them out of existence rather than punish them forever.  One of the many problems with annihilationism is pointed out by J.P. Moreland, in that it assumes God prefers the quality of human life over the sanctity of human life.  According to the quality of life view, people are seen as means to an end, rather than as ends in themselves, with the highest end being the elimination of all low qualities of life.  However, to treat people as means to an end is unbiblical, even in those cases in which the end is an actual greater good.  For example, executing an innocent few for the sake of the innocent many is morally wrong.  If God were to annihilate people, this would be to treat them as means to an end, the end being the removal of the lowest quality of life, which is Hell.  The sanctity of human life is rooted in us being God's image-bearers, and as such, we have intrinsic moral worth.  This moral worth trumps any quality of life argument.

4.  Thus, God's only option is to quarantine people.  The four popular purposes of punishment are: retribution, rehabilitation, deterrence, and the protection of society.  All but the first are forward-looking and actually dehumanize the criminal by attempting to force a change of their free will.  Only retribution presupposes free will and seeks to retain full human dignity and "respect" for the criminal by allowing them to receive what they have freely chosen.  The other views of punishment have a less robust view of moral responsibility.  Thus, in order to preserve the dignity of man, and to honor man as a free being, the greatest good is served in dealing with evil by allowing man the deliverances of his volition and to quarantine him forever away from the presence of God.

400-408 – Brooks Douglass share the true story behind the movie Heaven's Rain (heavensrainmovie.com).  There'll be a free public screening Wednesday night, April 13th, at the Reagan Library in the Air Force One Pavilion at 7pm.  But, they're expecting a big crowd, so RSVP at reaganfoundation.org, or by calling 805-522-2977.  Afterwards, Greg Totten, Ventura County DA, will interview Brooks and lead the Q&A.

• NBC Dateline Video (1/7/2011) The Haunting (The Story Behind Heaven's Rain).  Can you imagine forgiving the man who shot you, raped and shot your 12-year old sister, and murdered your parents?

The Making of Heavens Rain

Brooks Douglass and his sister, Leslie, grew up in a home filled with love, compassion, and faith. Their father, Richard, was a leader in the Baptist Church. Their mother, Marilyn, was a woman of faith and talent, turning down a scholarship to the renowned Juilliard School to join Richard in the Brazilian mission field.

On their return, Brooks age 16 and Leslie 12, Richard became pastor of a large church in Oklahoma City. On Oct. 15, 1979, Brooks opened the door of their modest family home to what he believed was a man in need. The man, a drugged-up drifter named Glen Ake, was joined by his partner, Steven Hatch. They pulled out guns, tied up the Douglasses, repeatedly assaulted Leslie, shot all four family members, and left them for dead.

Richard and Marilyn died at the scene. Brooks and Leslie recovered from their wounds, but their ordeal had just begun.

Ake and Hatch were caught, tried, and, in 1980, sentenced to death. For the next 16 years, however, the suffering rolled on as a legal system created to protect the rights of the accused dragged the Douglass children time after time to testify in court and relive that night.

The story became national news. But it was continuing bad news for Brooks and Leslie, forced to sell their family home and possessions to pay medical bills. Brooks struggled through high school and college, repeatedly failing out, drinking heavily, and given to bouts of rage. Leslie, once a beauty queen with a beautiful voice, fought to put her life together as she dealt with recurring nightmares and struggled in relationships.

In a 1986 retrial, Ake was convicted again but received life in prison instead death. Brooks Douglass became convicted as well, convicted that the system must no longer "step over the body of a victim to read the criminal his rights."

Brooks earned his law degree, and, at age 27, became the youngest state senator in Oklahoma history where he passed a series of victims' rights bill.

In 1995, a second turning point came. On a legislative tour of a state prison, Brooks saw Ake–requested a chance to talk to the man who had destroyed his family. HEAVEN'S RAIN shares the dramatic result of that meeting.

After three senate terms, Brooks changed directions, pursuing long-held creative desires. With Hollywood writer and director Paul Brown, Brooks co-wrote the HEAVEN'S RAIN script and produced and starred in the film.

While never shying from the hard facts, HEAVEN'S RAIN ultimately is a tribute to the love and faith of Brooks' parents. The Sunday before the tragedy, in fact, Richard Douglass preached on forgiveness. In a dramatization of that moment in the film, Brooks himself, playing his father, quotes the book of Matthew: "He sends the rain on the just and the unjust," and William Shakespeare: "The qualify of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven."

Obama Addresses Nation on Libya

Transcript (Fox News). Video (ABC News).

From John McCain:  "I welcome the President's clarity that the U.S. goal is for Qaddafi to leave power.  But an equal amount of clarity is still required on how we will accomplish that goal" (CBS News).

Obama didn't fare well in the fact check department (AP).

From Victor Davis Hanson:  President Obama just gave a weird speech. Part George W. Bush, part trademark Obama — filled with his characteristic split-the-difference, straw-man ("some say, others say"), false-choice tropes.  Later:  Somehow, I don't think Qaddafi will be impressed enough to step down; the European allies will be somewhat confused over the degree of future American support; the rebels will wonder whether they should take Tripoli or should settle for a zone of sanctuary; critics won't know whether Obama will ever consult the Congress;  we still don't know why Qaddafi was worse than an Assad or Ahmadinejad — or who or what the rebels are and what the U.S. role will be to ensure something better than Qaddafi (NRO).

William Kristol seemed to like the speech (Weekly Standard).

Video of Palin's response (RCP).

Tim Pawlenty told Hugh Hewitt he "supported the no-fly zone in early March when the rebels had Gaddafi on the ropes, when he was openly talking about leaving voluntarily, when they had him in a position to be able to manifest an opportunity to take over the country themselves without much involvement or intervention. And he didn't act decisively then, unfortunately. So now we have what we have, which is a three or four week delay from that, and a more challenging situation."  Pawlenty also gave tough talk on Syria, saying Obama's claim that the country is a partner for peace in the Middle East is "a complete crock, and it shows the naiveté of the Obama administration" (Townhall).

From the Telegraph:  Under Bush, the United States was feared by her enemies, respected by her allies, and decisive in the face of a series of crises. His successor however seems all too often paralyzed when it comes to US leadership, and unable to act without a permission slip from the United Nations or the Arab League. Liberals should just admit it – George W. Bush led the world rather than followed it. In contrast, the professorial President Obama runs US foreign policy like a focus group, unable to act without the stamp of approval of other international actors, and projecting weakness in its wake (Telegraph).

The Washington Times looks at the "mass of contradictions that makes this conflict a hard sell" for Obama (Washington Times).

Obama's deputy national security adviser explained "We don't make decisions about questions like intervention based on consistency or precedent" (The Hill).

There's talk Qaddafi's inner circle is cracking (Fox News).

Meanwhile:  Syrian troops opened fire on a crowd of up to 4,000 protesters in the southern city of Daraa, The Associated Press reported, citing eyewitnesses. At least 61 civilians have been killed since rallies began March 18, said Human Rights Watch, after security forces opened fire on demonstrators in at least six locations around the nation (The Street).

Yes, natural disasters are evidence of the end times:   Evangelicals 67%, Catholics 31%, Mainliners 34%.

Yes, natural disasters are evidence of climate change:  58% all respondents, 52% of Republicans, 52% Evangelicals.

CONCLUSION

A number of prophecy teachers say that a pronounced increase in frequency and intensity of earthquakes has occurred in the latter part of the twentieth century, a worldwide trend fulfilling a prophecy made by Jesus. Contrary to these prophecy teachers, no obvious trend is found indicating an abnormal increase in the frequency of large earthquakes during the last half of the twentieth century. Neither is there a noteworthy deficiency of earthquakes in the first half of the century. Graphical plots of global earthquake frequency indicate overall a decreasing frequency of earthquakes through the century. The decades of the 1970s, 80s and 90s experienced a deficit of larger earthquakes compared to earlier decades of the century. The 70s, 80s and 90s are precisely those decades that many prophecy teachers suppose, erroneously, show a dramatic surplus of larger earthquakes. Regional earthquake data from California and Japan also do not argue for increasing earthquake frequency in the latter decades of our century.

At the time of Christ the Jews had a heightened anticipation that wars, famines, pestilence and earthquakes communicated signs having apocalyptic significance. Jesus responded to apocalyptic expectations in the Olivet Discourse. Whether one interprets Matthew 24:4-14 as (1) events which will occur during the tribulation period, or (2) general signs of the present age, there is no clear scriptural warrant for the claim that earthquakes will increase dramatically prior to the return of Christ. In the former interpretation, these earthquakes would be part of the tribulation period and so of little significance for any increase in earthquakes during the present Church age. In the latter interpretation, earthquakes are seen as recurring catastrophic events common to the present age - events that must not be misinterpreted as "signs" of an immediate end. It is ironic that a passage that intentionally teaches that earthquakes are not indicators of the "end of the age" should be so frequently interpreted as teaching exactly the opposite.

Jesus' statement, "all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs" (Matt. 24:8), has been misunderstood to imply that pain would increase steadily in time. The birth image associated with such signs does not point (necessarily) to an increase in pain with time. Paul's understanding of creation's pain (Romans 8:18-25) is not that pain will grow steadily worse, but that the present period of suffering provokes eager longing for the new birth and the consummation of the coming age. The author of Hebrews sees a similar hope, not in anticipating a future "sign" of increasing earthquake activity, but in the coming of a sudden cosmic cataclysm producing a "kingdom which cannot be shaken" (Heb. 12:28).

Here's how it happens.  About 2 million people a day are "looking for God" on the internet (Googling terms such as "God," "Jesus," "prayer," "heaven", "hell," etc).  When they do so, about 10% of them are directed to over a hundred different evangelistic websites in the top 12 languages in the world, where they read or hear the Gospel via the 4 Spiritual Laws and are given an opportunity to pray to receive Christ.  Should they choose to do so, they are then given the opportunity to request follow-up, which is where the "online missionaries" at GMO come in.

400-408 – • Fox News (3/24/2011) Who's in Hell? Pastors' Criticism of Eternal Torment for Some Sparks Fierce Debate.

1) Senior Pastor Led (Sole Proprietor, e.g. Most Baptist, Calvary Chapels)

2) Presbytery Led (Franchise Store – Individually-owned and operated, e.g., Bel Air Presbyterian)

3) Congregational Led (Employee Owned, e.g. Lake Ave Congregational Church)

4) Bishop Led (Corporate Store, e.g. In-N-Out, and Episcopal and Catholic churches )

5) The Plurality of Elders Led (Senior Partnership, many independent-Bible churches)
